The Secret Cold War Partnership between Pope John Paul II and White House Revealed

The Secret Cold War Partnership between Pope John Paul II and White House Revealed

DEBKAfile Exclusive Intelligence Report

April 2, 2005, 12:18 PM (GMT+02:00)

Pope John Paul II broke out of the conventional papal mold in many ways that will engage generations of historians. Above all, he was the most democratic of any of his predecessors, always in close rapport with Catholic communities in every corner of the globe and possessed of an unfailing instinct for the times in which he lived. But the character of his papacy was also influenced critically by a chance episode that occurred more than a year before his investiture. This unreported episode and its epic aftermath are revealed here for the first time by DEBKAfile’s and DEBKA-Net-Weekly’s intelligence experts.

In January 1977, Jimmy Carter was sworn in as US President after defeating Gerald Ford at the polls. Cyrus Vance followed Henry Kissinger as secretary of state, the outgoing secretary moving to New York as a private consultant to governments, corporation heads and top financiers. Polish-born Zbigniew Brzezinski from Harvard and Columbia succeeded his fellow professor-cum-politician as the new president’s national security adviser.

The most signal achievement of Brzezhinski’s career was predetermined a year before he took office by one of his last experiences as an academic. In 1976, a Polish Archbishop, Karol Wojtyla, came to Harvard to deliver a lecture. So impressed was Professor Brzezinski, a churchgoer, that he invited the visitor for tea, during which they found much in common. The regular correspondence they embarked on, in Polish, continued for years after Wojtyla’s investiture as Pope John Paul II on October 22, 1978.

A candid glimpse behind the circumstances surrounding that event was afforded twenty years later by James M. Rentschler, a former US ambassador and staff member of the Carter administration’s National Security Council, in a recollection he wrote for the International Herald Tribune of October 30, 1998. Here are some excerpts:

“…an American president (Carter) inspired by the elevation of Cardinal Karol Wojtyla as the first Pole to become Pope, began a secret initiative that some believed altered the course of the Cold War.

“The word came from David Aaron, deputy to President Jimmy Carter’s National Security Council chief, Zbigniew Brzezinski: ‘Zbig’s got the president excited about this. They sense an enormous sea change in East-West relations.’ Mr. Aaron made me his DP, ‘designated papist’. The White House wanted an entire planeload of VIPs for the October 22 investiture. Naming the co-heads was easy: They had to be the Speaker of the House, Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neil and the Polish-born Mr Brzezinski himself – both Roman Catholics, both heavy-hitters in Mr. Carter’s party. Second-draft choices were no-brainers too: Senator Edward Muskie and Representatives Clement Zablocki and Barbara Mikulski, all Carter loyalists and all of Polish origin.

“But next came the nightmare.

“Casting from a pool of thousands, a presidential delegation limited to 30 prima donnas, whose collective profile might reflect some ‘ideal’ religious, racial, political, professional, gender and secular mix (‘secular’ being code for big-bucks campaign contributor). A rainbow coalition it wasn’t.

“’It’s the beginning of the end for communism,’ exulted Ms. Mikulski in Rome at a US Embassy lunch of rare oratorical exuberance. Some thought her toast measured more than a notch too high on the hyperbole meter, yet history proved her right. John Paul II’s courageous pilgrimages behind the Iron Curtain captured world attention from the start. Defying party orders, tumultuous East European turnouts soon made him communism’s liveliest scourge – and the Free World’s most valuable Cold War player.

“Meanwhile, state-supported terrorism was much on Mr. Brzezinski’s mind that radiant October day. …he slipped away from lunch into an adjoining room, where the CIA’s Rome station chief awaited him. Subject: tighter, tougher US-Italian security cooperation, with radical new tactics for combating Italy’s ruthless Red Brigades… In great secrecy Mr Brzezinski also initiated Mr. Carter’s historic Cold War move, working with the man whose power and influence inside the Holy See were second only to the Pope’s himself, Cardinal Agostino Casaroli, the Vatican secretary of state, a tough yet subtle negotiator privately known among his Curia as ‘Kissinger in a cassock’.

“He and Mr. Brzezinski opened a private channel between the White House and the Holy See, which National Security Council operatives dubbed the Vatican hot line. It was a link that Jimmy Carter and John Paul II soon made operational with a personal correspondence of extraordinary breadth …an unprecedented exchange between an American Baptist president and a Polish-born Roman Catholic pontiff. “

Rentschler notes that the forty still-classified letters cover a range of highly sensitive issues: arms control, human rights, famine relief, popular unrest behind the Iron Curtain, Soviet atrocities in Afghanistan, the fate of Catholic missionaries in China, Cuban adventurism in Africa, the Middle East peace process, hostage-taking and terrorism. He adds that, although both correspondents were careful to respect the delicate dividing line between political and pastoral, “it was always… one which, …on the heels of certain peace-promoting activities flowing from… their shared views, might have required microsurgery to perceive.”

DEBKAfile’s intelligence experts add: Brzezinski’s 1976 tea with the Polish cardinal fathered American Cold War strategy which was, in a word, to prime the imperfectly-suppressed religious zeal pulsating in the Soviet Bloc masses as the West’s doomsday weapon in the Cold War. Pilgrimages by the Polish pope, with the help of secret agitators, were to rouse the multitudes to rise up against their atheistic oppressors. Once the Christians were on the march, Brzezinski proposed persuading militant Islam to join the mission of inflaming the Soviet Union’s teeming Moslems.

From the historical perspective, Brzezinski’s plan of operation was the most radical applied in the Cold War till then, short of armed conflict. In comparison, the Nixon-Kissinger detente policy was much less aggressive, confining itself to photographing a given situation and freezing the arms race, while letting the Cold War go on according to agreed ground rules. Brzezinski’s religious crusading offensive went outside those rules. It was moreover a form of combat in which the West held unbeatable cards. All Moscow Center’s national liberation and terrorist movements, Philby’s phenomenal double agents and moles and Yuri Andropov’s intelligence genius were useless to protect the USSR’s Achilles heel, the proletariat’s unquenched yearning for organized religion, in defiance of the most brutal efforts to stamp it out.

Brzezinski’s brainwave of harnessing religious zeal to beat communism had two extreme though opposite effects. The force of Christianity was a major factor in undermining Soviet communist domination of East Europe. Its lands turned around to embrace democratic change, a pro-Western orientation and a market economy in a still-evolving process. In Asia and the Middle East, Carter’s national security adviser resorted to fundamentalist Islam to defeat communism. The CIA-supported mujaheddin did indeed drive the Red Amy out of Afghanistan. But this same religious weapon eventually became a boomerang against America. It spawned Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda, the Islamic jihadist terrorist movement dedicated to destroying the West and its values,.

Russia will adopt preventive use of force ,Russian Defense Minister

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov answered to the popular Russian weekly newspaper "Argumenty i Fakty"

A reader of the popular Russian weekly newspaper, Argumenty i Fakty, asked: "What can Russia do to stop NATO from approaching our borders?"

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov answered: "If NATO military infrastructure is created in the Baltic countries, any military and political actions Russia takes will correspond to the principles of self-defence. We do not have illusions about why the Baltic countries have been admitted into NATO and why it has already started deploying its planes there. This has nothing to do with the fight against terrorism. I believe that if our partners treat our concerns seriously, they will do everything possible to prevent Russia's estrangement and not to inflict damage on it. We would welcome the beginning of negotiations on these problems.

So far, however, NATO's actions worry us. The decision made at alliance's summit in 2002 to carry out military operations, in cases of necessity, outside the territories of NATO member-countries is especially alarming. If this new principle of the preventive use of force is regarded as a legitimate one in international affairs, then Russia will have no other choice than to adapt itself to the situation and to act adequately to ensure its national interests."

Apex court rejects Swamy's plea against Sonia

Apex court rejects Swamy's plea against Sonia
By J. Venkatesan

New Delhi, April 11. The Supreme Court today dismissed at the
admission stage a writ petitionfiled by Janata Party president
Subramanian Swamy seeking a direction to the Election Commission to
register a complaint against Congress president Sonia Gandhi for
filing a false affidavit regarding her educational qualification when
she contested from the Rae Bareliparliamentary constituency last year.

A Bench of Chief Justice R.C. Lahoti and Justice G.P. Mathur declined
to entertain the petition despite forceful arguments made by Swamy
himself pleading for issuing notice to the Election Commission and
Sonia Gandhi.

In his petition Swamy contented that in her affidavit Sonia Gandhi had
claimed that she had undergone a English course from Cambridge
University in the United Kingdom. To a query, the Cambridge University
had replied that Sonia Gandhi was never a student and that she had
obtained the certificates from one of the English teaching schools in
the UK.

Swamy argued that it was a case of forgery wilfully committed by Sonia
Gandhi. She has even admitted before the Lok Sabha Speaker while
giving information on 'who's who' that it was a typographical error
that she was a student of Cambridge University.

Swamy said that if the affidavit was to have any sanctity it should be
accurate and for filing a false affidavit, a case should be registered
against Sonia Gandhi.

He said the Supreme Court order requiring all candidates to give a
declaration on affidavit atthe time of contesting election should not
become a dead letter. The Court, however, did not accept his argument
and dismissed the petition.

India ; Swamy's petition against Sonia dismissed :
Monday, April 11, 2005

[India News] New Delhi, In a major relief to Congress chief Sonia
Gandhi, the Supreme Court Monday dismissed Janata Party president
Subramanian Swamy's petition asking for a case against her for a false
declaration about her educational qualifications.

Swamy had sought a direction to the Election Commission to register a
case against Sonia Gandhi for filing a false affidavit regarding her
educational qualifications before the Rae Bareli returning officer
during last year's Lok Sabha poll.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice R.C. Lahoti and Justice G.P.
Mathur dismissed the petition after hearing brief arguments from Swamy
urging the court to seek the response of the Election Commission and
Sonia Gandhi in this matter.

The Janata Party president contended that Sonia Gandhi had filed an
affidavit stating that she had undergone an English course from
Cambridge University. But he found out from the university that she
had never been a student of that university and had only obtained the
certificate from an "English teaching shop" in Britain.

[India News] He argued that by giving a false declaration, Sonia
Gandhi had committed forgery, but the district election officer had
rejected his petition for initiating action against her.

Swamy asserted that Sonia Gandhi herself had admitted before the Lok
Sabha speaker that the information regarding the Cambridge University
was a typographical error. He wanted the court to ask Sonia Gandhi to
file her response in the light of this admission, but the court
declined to entertain the petition.

I am a proud American Hindu -- never, ever dare call me "South Asian"

-- Narain Kataria

Some anti-Hindu and anti-Indian groups in USA have coined a funny
phrase "South Asian" for the people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh,
Sri Lanka, Nepal, etc. A large majority of the members of these
groups that use the meaningless phrase "South Asian" are Hindus from
India. They were born as Hindus. Many of them were educated in
missionary schools or in the KGB funded schools in India or elsewhere
and consider themselves to be intellectuals. But, somehow they have
developed a sense of inferiority for the word Hindu. They are ashamed
of their parentage, ancestry, heritage and civilization.

Many of these so called intellectuals are endowed with a deep sense of
ignorance about the chivalry, gallantry, sacrifices, courage and
magnanimity of their great Hindu ancestors. So, they like to identify
a massive block of one-billion people as "South Asians" in place of
their accurate description as "Hindus." Shorn of antiquity and
splendor of the Hindu civilization, shunned by their parents and
society, these people with Hindu-sounding names have become a
culturally rootless and a confused lot. Cut asunder from their roots,
these nomadics have been grabbed by their adroit masters of deception
who use, misuse and manipulate them against their own people. Their
masters, of course, pay them according to the amount of ridicule these
'intellectuals' pour on their own people!
A massive block of one-billion people with no distinct identity of
their own? How come?

In order to conceal their real agenda, these cunning fellows operate
under different jargons. Sometimes, they are touted as "Human Rights
Activists" and at the other times as NGOs. In order to gain
credibility, they organize seminars under fancy names in prestigious
universities. They often hobnob with anti-Hindu groups and work in
tandem with them. But the main aim of all their activities is to
create disaffection, drive a wedge between the Hindu people, demonize
and demoralize the Hindu organizations, and ultimately try to
obliterate our cultural mainstay Hinduism from the Indian soil.

As a matter of tactics, these scoundrels have retained their
Hindu-sounding names as a subterfuge to lull gullible Hindus into
believing that they are one of them. In fact, the persons operating
these shady organizations are wolves in sheep's clothing. It is
incumbent on us to challenge them, expose them and socially boycott
them. Mr. K.S. Sudarshan, Chief of RSS has aptly described them as
"Macaulay-putras" and "Marx-putras". I would also like to add one
more adjective to them – "Arab-putra." As the Hindi proverb goes:
they are like "Dhobi ka kutta, na ghar ka, na ghaat ka".

The greatest and the oldest civilization in the world, and identified
by a meaningless name as the South Asians. What a disgrace?
Let us not forget that we Hindus are the worthy descendants of great
Rishis and Munis, the countless brilliant minds ever produced by human
kind. The word "Hindu" for us, therefore, has become a magical word,
creating a tremendously unifying and uplifting force within us. When
I say "I am a Hindu," I instantly connect myself with one of the
brightest and the mightiest groups of one billion Hindus around the

Calling myself Hindu – and not South Asian – immediately reminds me of
my glorious past. It tells me about the innumerable contributions of
my people to the world civilization. My people possess brilliant
brains that invented the mathematical concepts of Zero and Decimal
System. We first conceived the Law of Gravity and the Law of
Relativity. The Pythagorean Theorem was our gift to the humanity and
the value of the mathematical constant was first computed by us. My
ancestors determined the value of the mathematical constant "Pi."

Calling myself by my real identity immediately reminds me of my
glorious past
My great ancestors, the Hindus, developed the Geometry and Algebra,
the measurement of Time, the Astronomy, the Astrology. It was the
Hindu people who founded the world's first university around 2,700
years ago near Takshashila. The Hindu Rishis (scientists) originally
conceived the concepts of Atom and Molecule (Anu and Parmanu) 600 BCE.
Hindus even knew a lot about the science of plastic surgery 2600
years ago. Shipbuilding and Navigation in Ancient India was also
known to our forefathers. Iron pillar at Delhi, located near Kutub
Minar – a marvelous feat in metallurgy – is estimated to have been
cast in the Gupta period about 1500 years ago.

Let us understand one thing very clearly. Anyone describing Hindus as
the South Asians is actuated by an ignoble intent and motivated by a
malicious design to deprive Hindus of their pride and dignity. They
want to divest Hindus of their glorious Hindu identity. They want
Hindus to become rootless so as to misguide and mislead them into an
abyss where they are doomed to suffer for the rest of their lives.

Please remember very well that I am a proud American Hindu, never,
ever dare call me "South Asian".

"Hindu" word sends an electric current through my spine and
immediately links me to the sacred rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Godawari,
Kaveri, Brahmputra, Sarasvati. It reminds me of Lord Rama, Lord
Krishna, Lord Shiva, Guru Nanak, Lord Ganesha, Lord Mahavir and
Buddha. We Hindus adore Durga Devi, Lakshmi Devi, Sarasvati Devi,
Ambika and Uma with equal devotion and vehemence. When I ponder over
the extraordinary feats of bravery of Rani Lakshmi of Jhansi,
Durgavati, Keladai Chennamma, my head bows down in utmost reverence.
The word "Hindu" transports me mentally to Ayodhya, Mathura, Amritsar,
Maya, Kashi, Kanchi, Haridwar, Avantika, Dwarka, Puri, Madurai,
Badrinath and Kanyakumari.

Talking in terms of South Asia, we unwittingly associate and identify
ourselves with the people who extol the virtues of hatred and

I feel supremely fulfilled when I think about the great Hindu centers
of power in ancient times – like the Empires of Chola and Pandya
Dynasties, the Pataliputra of Chandragupta, Ujjain of Vikramaditya,
Pratishthan of Shalivahan, Devagiri of Yadavas and Vijaynagar of
Harihar and Bukka. When I read the stories of gallantry, valor and
heroism of Guru Gobind Singh ji, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Maharana
Pratap Singh, Veer Durgadas, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Banda
Bahadur, Veer Savarkar and innumerable known and unknown Hindu
warriors and heroes, my joy knows no bounds.

Contrary to what we Hindus stand for as I have briefly stated above,
when we talk in terms of South Asia, we unwittingly associate and
identify ourselves with the people who extol the virtues of hatred and
violence. They believe in terrorism and Jihad. Anwar Shaikh, a
renowned Muslim religious scholar from London in his book "This is
Jehad" has said that "Thus, for a mujahid or jehadi, it is not only
required to slaughter the unbelievers, even a peaceful unbeliever,
[but also] kidnap and rape his women, enslave his children, all for
the only reason of his unbelief."
In South Asia, Afghanistan was the outpost of terrorism and Pakistan
has been the breeding ground of terrorism for a very long time.
Bangladesh is fast becoming another epicenter for jehadis. Pakistan
has already ethnically cleansed the "Kafirs" (non-Muslims) from its
soil by converting or driving out all the Hindu and Sikh population.
In 1947, there were about 23% Hindu-Sikh living in Pakistan, now there
is only 1% Hindu population. Bangladesh has systematically reduced
Hindu population from 30% in 1947 to 9% at this time. Islamic
militants have driven out about 500,000 Hindus and Sikhs from the
Kashmir valley. South Asia includes all such monstrous and rogue

Why are Hindus being lumped together with so many of the uncivilized
As against those, Hindus are civilized and peaceful people. They have
their special identity and noble character. It is incomprehensible
for me to fathom as to why Hindus are being lumped together with so
many of the uncivilized brutes. There is nothing common between them
and us. They trace their ancestry to Babar, Gazni and Gori, the worst
of pirates and plunderers that world has seen. They laid waste
Hindland and committed unprecedented brutalities on our people. By
bundling the peaceful and noble Hindus with Arab-zadas (the children
of Arabs) and by describing them all as "South Asians," an attempt is
being made to cover the Islamic misdeeds and legitimize their beastly

Again, listen carefully, I am a proud Hindu. Never ever, dare call me
"South Asian."
Politically conscious Hindus are able to see through your insidious
attempt to give respectability to those who believe in murder and
mayhem. How dare you club the civilized Hindu people with that
monstrous mentality that has heaped untold humiliation on the hapless

Don't you know that these barbarians bricked alive two sons of our
Tenth Guru Govind Singh Ji? Do not you know that in year 1,399, that
Muslim barbarian Taimur killed 100,000 Hindus in a single day? Prof.
K.S. Lal, in his "Growth of Muslim Population in India" writes that
according to his calculations, the Hindu population was brought down
by 80 million between the years 1,000 and 1,525 triggering probably
the biggest holocaust in world history." This is quoted by Francois
Gautier, a prominent French journalist. Are you not aware that these
marauders sawed alive our saintly souls and killed our forefathers
limb by limb?
You pipsqueak rotten crooks, remember very well that I am a proud
Hindu. Never, ever dare call me "South Asian".

Brajesh Mishra , a Congress Mole in NDA government

Mr. Brajesh Mishra's father, the late D.P.Mishra was a
staunch and ambitious Congressman, very close to
Indira Gandhi, has been promoting the interests of the
Sonia Congress from the beginning.

Brajesh Mishra tried to see that the NDA would not get
victory in the 2004 Parliamentary elections.

There is a record of the mischiefs of the Prime
Minister's Principal Secretary, Brajesh Mishra, who, IntelliBriefs
sources said he had become the PM himself and was taking
some decisions which were not in the interests of the
nation and the BJP.

Source further said that the following decisions were taken by him and
they were of the above type:

(1)It was on Sonia's direction that her arch rival
Maneka Gandhi was removed from the Atalji's cabinet
most unceremoniously.

(2) Mishra tried his best to see that Advani did not
become the Dy, P.M., but failsed , thanks to
intervention by some RSS bigwigs.
Please refer to

rise as Deputy PM

Provocation to
Publication Free Press Journal
Date : July 7, 2002
A last minute move to deny L. K. Advani the Deputy
Prime Minister's
designation was foiled by the Sangh Parivar.

(3) The appointment of Chief Election Commissioner,
T.V.S.Krishnamurthy, an anti-BJP and pro-Congressman

(4) The appointment of Chief Justice Anand as chairman
of the NHRC.

(5) When the Indian Airlines plane was hijacked and
relatives of passengers were agitating for conceding
the demands of the hijackers, the Prime Minister
Atalji was strongly refusing to concede the demands.
Almost all opposition parties and most of the people
were behind Vajpayeeji in this respect. However, all
of a sudden, a contrary decision was taken, possibly
succumbing to foreign pressure through Brajesh Mishra,

(6) On Constitution Review Committee the appointment of
the Chairman, who had no guts to discuss important
issues such as disqualifying a foreigner for the top
posts of President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice
etc.is another example. The Committee made a mockery of
itself and of the BJP, thanks to the wily anti-BJP
chairman. Refer to an article of Subhash
Kashyap, a member of the Com. on the Const. Review

(7) On the Kargil committee and as an advisor to the MEA,
appointing B. G. Verghese, who is known to be
anti-Hindu. Even the chairman of the committee was K.
Subranmanium, who is a pro-Nehru man. Generally
pro-Nehru men are anti-Hindutva men, since Nehru's
hatred towards Hindutva is well known.

(8) Bharatratna was not awarded to V. D. Savarkar.

(9) Padmashri was awarded to Kumar Ketkar, former editor
of Maharashtra Times, a Marathi daily, who is a
wel-known anti-Hindutva crusader, but not to many
senior journalists, who are nearer Hindutva views.

(10) But to please Mr.Vajpayee,
A senior bureaucrat said " Dr.Ranavat from the U.S., who
treated him in the Breach Candy Hospital, and Padmaja
Phenani, who sang his poems were given President's
medals on the republic day. This is the general trick
or trap which wily bureaucrats adopt to gain the
confidence and sympathy of their bosses.Wily
bureaucrats even lick the shoes of the boss to get his
confidence and then betry him like Brutus and stab him
back as Mishra did to see that Hindutva forces are
defeated. "

(11) Another source said
" On the Speaker's panel of journalists, I found the
name of Rajdeep Sardesai, who is known for his
anti-Hindu stand. "

(12) Dilip Patgaonkar, another anti-Hindu journalist is
assigned many important jobs. Recently he was taken on
the Kashmir Committee.

(13) The appointment of Soli Sorabji as Attorney General is
also controversial according to IntelliBriefs experts. He had once
remarked that the place of the Baj Rang Dal is jails.
In the Supreme Court he pleaded for minority rights in
the case on the Article 30 of the Constitution. He
criticized the Gujarat government in his tour of U.K.

No anti-Hindu person should have been appointed on
important posts. Congress Governments never appointed
pro-Hindu persons on such posts.

(14) On the Parliamentary Advisory Committee under the
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, there were
10 Congress MPs out of their 112 MPs, whereas the BJP
had only one out of its 182.

As a result the media is controlled by anti-BJP

(15) "Vajpayee's actions against Kalyan Singh of UP, Ram
Jethmalani (involved in a controversy with Soli
Sorabji) and Jain might have been prompted by Brajesh
Mishra" Soure said .

Even if people disagree with IntelliBrief . We have to be very vigilant.

We are afraid, Mishra had been lobbying for American interests.

Violence in Northeast India

Violence in Northeast India

Hinduism Today
January/February/March, 2005

Suffering the effects of poverty, neglect, exploitation and religious conversion

Turn on the television any day of the week, anywhere in the world, and you are sure to catch current news detailing terrorist atrocities occurring in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although similar violence is being committed by insurgents in Northeast India, these latter crimes are receiving surprisingly little news coverage.

On a single day in early October, 2004, militants set off bombs and opened gunfire all across India's Northeast, killing at least 46 people and wounding nearly 100. Two bombs exploded in a marketplace in Dimapur, the commercial center in the state of Nagaland. At the same time, a third bomb ripped through a nearby railway station. Twenty-six people died in the Nagaland attacks. Later on the same day, heavily armed Bodo tribal guerrillas in the neighboring state of Assam drove into a town square and gunned down eleven people who were shopping in a local market. Almost simultaneously, guerrillas of the United Liberation Front of Assam, the biggest of the insurgent groups in the Northeast, set off grenades at four places in Assam killing nine people.

India's mountainous Northeast is home to nearly 200 underground militant organizations, some of which have thousands of fighters. (See www.satp.org/satporgtp/co...ndex.html) It is generally reported that a portion of these groups are seeking greater autonomy or statehood, while others are demanding secession and the formation of Christian states. In truth, however, what these groups really want depends on who you ask.

Dr. Arun Kumar Sarma, Ph.D., a Member of Parliament representing Assam Gan Parishad [AGP] in the Lok Sabha, told our Hinduism Today correspondent, Rajiv Malik, that he was not aware of any violent conversion efforts. "I am myself a Hindu, " Dr. Sarma said. "And I can tell you that the local Hindus of the Northeast are mainly concerned with immigrants, whether they are from India or from Bangladesh. These immigrants infiltrate the Northeast region of India to settle there and exploit business and employment opportunities that would ordinarily go to the native populace. What I want to emphasize here is that the insurgency exists for economic rather than religious reasons. Actually, a large portion of the Northeast is already Christian. Who is there left to convert? The government of India is primarily responsible for the lack of financial stability in the Northeast. They have no clear-cut policy for the economic development of the region. Most development funds go into the poc!
kets of either corrupt politicians or insurgents who kidnap government servants for ransom. Among the Hindus, the high caste exploits the low caste, including the tribal people. In addition to all of this, Central Government is not doing anything for the preservation of Hindu temples and ashrams, although they conscientiously maintain Buddhist monasteries."

Offering a different perspective in an article written for Mainstream, commentator Kunal Ghosh states: "Baptist Christian terrorists are active in India's Northeast. They derive their financial support from the southern parts of the USA where the Baptist Church has a strong following. Funds are collected in the form of donations in various church establishments. Some of this money is spent in true philanthropic work such as spreading education and health care.

"However, it has been suspected for a long time that a part of these funds get diverted to the purchase of arms for Baptist terrorists of the Northeast. Ex-Chief Election Commissioner, T.N. Seshan, gave voice to this suspicion in a television panel discussion on Doordarshan back in 1993 when he said, 'Our Army is baffled by the seemingly unending supply of sophisticated and expensive arms and equipment flooding into the Northeast. Money generated by the local extortion of businessmen and citizens accounts for only a small fraction of funds collected. The greater part must be coming from abroad. It is suspected that the funds come from Christian sources such as the Baptist Church in southern USA and the Presbyterian Church of the UK.'

"The most prominent among the terrorist outfits of Tripura is the NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura). It employs terror tactics to effect mass conversion to Christianity and is a predominantly Baptist organization. On August 6, 1999, four RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) workers of Tripura, named Shyamal Kanti Sen Gupta, Sudhamoy Dutta, Dinendranath Dey, Shubhankar Chakraborti, were kidnapped by the NLFT and taken to a camp in the jungles of Bangladesh. A ransom of one million dollars was demanded from their parent organization. When the RSS refused to pay, they were put to death. Their 'sin' was that they were preaching among the tribals to preserve Hinduism. Although our constitution permits propagation of religious faith by any legitimate means, this crime of murder did not create a media sensation.

"This is not the first time that a Hindu preacher has been attacked in Northeast India. In 1999, Swami Gokulananda, the present head of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram of New Delhi, says that during the 1980s when he was Secretary of the Khasi Hills Ashrama in Meghalaya, 'The hostile forces were against our movement as it was trying to bring back the lost tradition of faith among the people of the Khasi hills. They wanted to remove me. One day, a time bomb was planted in my room but they did not succeed in killing me.' "

On a map, the seven states of Northeast India look conspicuously orphaned. Attached to the rest of India only by a thin sliver of land that marks the juncture of Bihar and West Bengal, these "seven sisters, " as they are sometimes called, are all but separated from their mother Bharat by an imposing, wall-shaped Bangladesh.

The mountainous terrain of the area is rich with beauty and heritage, but the wedge of separation left in the wake of India's Partition in 1948 has severed valuable lifelines to the region and catalyzed violence through desperation. Ten thousand people have been killed here over the past ten years.

What is Brajesh Mishra's locus standi to meet General Musharraf ?

There is a news item saying that General Musharraf, during his visit to India, will be meeting with Brajesh Mishra along with Gujral, Vajpayee & co.

Curious to say the least. What is Mishra's locus standi to meet a
visiting head of state?

IntelliBriefs sources learnt from a senior politician who want to remain anonymous , that the meeting was set up by External affairs ministry . The source say "More curious, the appointment was set up by MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) ! "

Africa cries for revenge

Posted April 13, 2005

By M.S.N. Menon

Revenge and reparation—this is what Africa wants from the West. And it has an account to settle with the Christian church.

On the wall of the Elmina Castle in Ghana is a plaque. It proclaims: “In everlasting memory of the anguish of our ancestors. May those who died rest in peace. May those who return find their roots. May humanity never again perpetrate such injustices.” Pious wish, you might say.

Slave forts like Elmina are to be found all along the western coast of Africa. At the end of the 18th century, there were 14 English forts, 15 Dutch, four Portuguese, four Dutch, three French and six Spanish, where slaves were interned before they were shipped out to the plantations of the New World.

The Christian church was a party to the slave trade. Did it not consider the black man as the son of the devil? Even the Reformation made no impact on the slave trade. Inequality, said Martin Luther, the leader of the Reformation, is embedded in the natural order.

This is no reflection on Jesus Christ. He was the embodiment of compassion. But the church was the legatee of the Roman empire and its brutalities. How else could the European Christians hunt down other human beings with net and rope as animals are hunted? It is estimated that in all about 40 million Africans were captured during the three centuries of the slave trade. About half of them perished on the way and in the plantations.

The Spanish and the Portuguese were the most brutal. This is what the British statesman, Lord Palmerston had to say: “The plain truth is that the Portuguese are, of all European nations, the lowest in the moral scale.” We Hindus should know, for the Portuguese were no less cruel to the Goans.

Who were the main cultprits? Britain, France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, Protugal, Spain and the USA. Albert Schweitzer, an eminent church leader, confessed: “We and our civilisation are burdened with a great debt... Anything we give them (Africans) is not benevolence, but atonement.” He supported the African demand for reparations.

It was in 1481 that the Portuguese set up the first slave fort on the west coast of Africa. England entered the trade in 1562. And the last slave ship sailed out from the west coast in 1807, though the trade continued for another half a century clandestinely. For over three centuries, men of the Christian faith perpetrated the most horrendous crime against the Africans. Islam was not far behind, for it was engaged in slave trade all along the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Says Sir Reginald Coupland: “It is difficult not to regard this treatment of Africa by Christian Europe...as the greatest crime in history.”

Nudity was the rule in the ships for both males and females. The slaves ate from a common bucket. Sharks infested the trade route, scavenging for carcasses. In 1827 Commodore Bullen informed the British Admiralty that in a ship he had captured, there were 525 slaves “crowded together in a solid mass of filth and corruption”. According to him, many had gone blind. They were simply tossed to the sharks. What awaited the slaves at the plantations was even worse, for they were yoked to ploughs like animals in the absence of horses.

The slave trade was highly profitable. The traders bought the Africans at £2 per slave and sold them at $325 per male in 1840 and at $500 in 1860. It is said that a round trip gave a profit of £ 60,000 to the shipping companies. America, too, was a major beneficiary, for it had almost a monopoly in shipbuilding in those days.

England was perhaps the greatest beneficiary of the slave trade. But let it be said to the credit of England and its people that they were the first to initiate a ban on slave trade. Denouncing the trade, Lord Palmerston said in 1844: “If all crimes committed from creation down to the present day were added together, they would not exceed, I am sure, the guilt of the diabolic slave trade.”

It was no easy matter to abolish the slave trade. It was resisted. President Lincoln had to fight a civil war to stop it in America.

It is the claim of the Christian church, more so of the Baptists of America, that the Hindus are living in darkness, that they need the Christian light. One can only laugh at these presumptions. Europe and America had bloodied Christianity with horrendous crimes. No confession can wash off these sins. As Herzen said of the European nations: “We are not the doctors. We are the disease.”

My plea to those who want to bring light to us Hindus: Please, do not infect us with your diseases.

Brijesh Mishra a CIA agent?

Brijesh Mishra a CIA agent?

On September 27, 2001 Rahul Gandhi MP and his Columbian live in girl
friend of Kerala backwater tourist centre fame, Juanita alias Veronique,
was arrested in United States of America's Logan airport in Boston, by
the FBI. Rahul was having an Italian passport and was carrying suitcase
full of dollars. Some say it was about $2 billion or was it $2 million.
This huge dollar amount generated suspicion with the US authorities.
Rahul and his girl friend was thus detained by FBI. FBI suspected that
Rahul was carrying terrorist funds or drug money for laundering in US.
Rahul called his mother Sonia Gandhi in India. In turn Sonia called
Brijesh Mishra, the former National Security Advisor and a key aide to
former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at the Prime Ministers Office.
Brijesh Mishra intervened on behalf of our PM Vajpayee with the US
Administration for the release Rahul from FBI custody. Rahul Gandhi was
released only when the Indian Ambassador intervened and gave assurances to
the State Department that Rahul Gandhi will be produced for any future
enquiry by FBI. Not only that as a patriot, it was the duty of Brijesh
Mishra to find out the reasons for the arrest and inform our CBI to take
necessary further steps. Brijesh Mishra did not do any such thing. The
incident clearly shows that Brajesh Mishra was working for Sonia, that he
had deep connections with US state department. In short Brijesh Mishra is
a traitor.

In Sep 2004 when Washington played host to Young political sons, Sachin
Pilot, Milind Deora, Jitin Prasada (all Congress Party), and Manvendra
Singh (a lone BJP fellow) followed by liquor baron who got himself elected
to a the Rajya Sabha, Vijay Mallya (Janata Party) and ever smiling Rajiv
Shukla of the Congress. Yet one prominent face was missing which was that
of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi didn't go to USA with the young
politicians. It was Shukla who conceived the idea of the Indo-US
Parliamentary Forum to create a counterpart to the India Caucus in the US
House of Representatives. Rahul Gandhi had to avoid going to the U.S.
forever, because of the pending police questions he could be arrested
again by FBI if he ever steps in to US. What money Rahul Gandhi was
carrying? Was it another Bofors type pay off? Was it Columbian drug
money on behalf of his Columbian girl friend? Or was it fund for Osama Bin
Laden group, as it is known that the Muslim terrorists are using
Christians as front men for laundering terrorist funds as the normal
banking channels are being monitored by FBI.

Brijesh Mishra has strong connections with Sonia Gandhi's Italian family
through his daughter Jyotsna. Jyotsna is married to an Italian and lives
in Italy. So it is not surprising that there was no investigation when
Sonia lied about her birth date, and birth place. Sonia Gandhi first
declared her birth date as 1944 and birth place as Luciana. This was
confirmed by the Italian embassy which submitted her birth certificate to
our Home ministry in 1983. Sonia Gandhi's name was Antonia Maino as per
this certificate. This true birth certificate was submitted by the
Italian embassy to the Indian Home Ministry when Antonia Maino applied for
Indian citizenship. When Rajiv Gandhi married Antonia Maino newspapers
had written that both of them were of the same age. It also confirms that
Sonia's birth year was 1944. . Antonia Maino's father, who was a mason
and a fascist, Signor Stefano Maino, was a prisoner-of-war in Russia from
1942 till Italy surrendered to the Allies in 1945. It is obvious that
Maino cannot be the father of Antonia Maino. So the date of birth and
place of birth of Antonia Maino alias Sonia Gandhi had to be changed to
cover up this fact. Her new date of birth became December 9, 1946, and
her place of birth became Orbassano. . Instead of investigating all
these fraud by Sonia Gandhi, Brijesh was working for Sonia Gandhi while
heading Prime Minister Vajpayee's Office. Even after the UPA government
came in to power Brijesh is holding a secret official position in the
present UPA government that entitles him to a diplomatic passport. This
should be called the biggest treachery in modern India.

Brajesh Mishra refused to authorize from February to May 2004 period the
arrest of the CIA spy in RAW, .Rabinder Singh, despite repeated request
for permission. This urgent request for arrest was asked by RAW official
Mr.Amar Bhushan. It looks like Brijesh Mishra himself was working for CIA
and thus by not permitting the arrest of a traitor enabled the CIA spy,
Rabinder Singh to escape to USA in mid May 2004. From this one can guess
the capability of our Vajpayee who only dropped the corrupt N.K.Singh, but
refused to let go the traitor Brijesh Mishra in spite of warnings.

Subranian Swamy questions Brajesh Mishra

Subranian Swamy questions Brajesh Mishra

1. India is facing a severe threat to its national integrity.
Indians will soon have to decide on whose side they stand on the
side of the ancient Indian civilization or in the corner of
fraudulent money throwing foreign fraudulent Christian missionary
forces who are out to disrupt India. The recent visits of
Benny Hinn and K.A.Paul are indicative of the likely `invasion' of
India by these forces and its money power. Their patron, as
indicted by Benny Hinn publicly, is Ms.Sonia Gandhi. Most of
Congress Party has already capitulated to these forces.

2. Some Indian leaders, professing to be devout Hindus, who have
capitulated, on blackmail, and have become the tools of these
forces. Ms.Jayalalitha, the present CM of Tamil Nadu is one such
Hindu renegade. She has pathetically surrendered to Ms.Sonia Gandhi
and agreed to do Ms.Gandhi's bidding undermine the Hindu heritage.
The bogus cases filed against the Kanchi Acharyas and the
sullying of the Acharya's personal character is one such example of
attack. The question arises why Indian Christian organizations are
silent about this outrage especially after the Supreme Court verdict
that there is no prima facie case? The defaming of Vivek Oberoi by
Ms.Jayalalitha is also at the behest of these forces who want to use
the Tsunami victims as a base. Ms.Jayalalitha's cringing message on
Pope's death over Radio Vatican is yet another example of
this capitulation.

3. Moreover, India is ungovernable today with adherence to Nehruvian
secularism. India will go the way of Soviet Union and Yugoslavia
and disintegrate, unless secularism is redefined to include a Social
Contract between the majority Hindu community and minorities, much
like the Parsis had agreed to.

4. Hence I have decided to call for a Conference on `Threats to
India's Integrity' in New Delhi on April 23, 2005 (Programme
enclosed). The nation is not safe until the UPA Government is

The crude attack of the former Secretary to the PM, Mr.Brijesh

charges against him (Mishra).

Will Mr. Mishra publicly deny the following on record:

(a) That he holds a position in the present UPA government that
entitles him to a diplomatic passport?

(b) That he has strong connections with Sonia Gandhi's Italian
family through his daughter Jyotsna, who is married to an Italian
and lives in Italy.

(c) That he refused to authorize in February-May 2004 period the
arrest of the CIA spy in RAW, Mr.Rabinder Singh, despite repeated
requested for permission by RAW official Mr.Amar Bhushan, thus
enabling Singh to escape to USA on mid May

(d) That he intervened with US Administration to release from FBI
custody Mr.Rahul Gandhi MP and his live in girl Juanita alias
Veronique, when he was arrested in Boston's Logan airport on
September 27, 2001?

RSS / BJP : Old Leaders must go

-- Care Our India

Starting 2000, I started criticizing Vajpayee whenever I got the occasion, either in forums or group discussions. Whoever read my postings blasted me for being a traitor of Hindus and for targeting the one and only one Hindu statesman Vajpayee. Well, I had a genuine grouse against him. The logic goes like this:

Before 1999, when BJP came to power, it promised these basic measures.

1) Scrapping article 370 of the constitution and complete integration of J&K with rest of India
2) Building temple at Ayodhya
3) Ban conversions
4) Apply uniform civil code
5) De-detoxification of school textbooks
6) Corrupt free administration
8) Giving Hindus their rightful place in the country and stop appeasing minorities

I agree some of them are highly controversial & some of them are least controversial. How difficult is to clean the administration, clean the political and elections system, ban conversions, scrap article 370 and fight Pakistan?

Then I noticed Vajpayee getting selfish right after the nuclear tests. He saw an opportunity to leave a legacy behind and become a western recognized STATESMAN. He stopped making noises on the above issues starting 2000. By 2002, the transformation was complete. The left wing controlled media plotted a grand strategy, having failed to install a p-sec govt. They separated the party from Vajpayee. They raised him to new heights, making him believe that he became acceptable to the Indian masses and his allies only because he has moderate views (code word for p-sec views). Until 2002, Advani kept his Hindutva image intact but he also started noticing what the media has to say about Vajpayee. With the media and p-sec groups drowning him with carefully orchestrated accolades, Vajpayee's transformation was complete. During the same period, Hindus who helped him reach PM's office were left stunned, helpless, angry and dejected. The media knew this very much but came up with opinion polls at regular intervals to state that only moderates are acceptable to the Indian masses. As a result, he did these:

1) Make Lahore bus trip, get stabbed in Kargil, then invite the same rogue general, then stabbed again with Parliament attack and then open the borders with rail and bus links. Article 370 was totally out of his mind.
2) Conversions were blessed by ignoring it
3) Never uttered the word Lord Ram, not to mention the temple.
4) No mention of uniform civil code
5) Colluded with commies and congress to call an all-party meeting within 48 hrs. to negate the judgment of SC on the issue of rogue elements entering the election fray.
6) Ignored corruption.
7) Talking peace with Pakistan and Bangladesh while our soldiers and BSF jawans were butchered and dead bodies displayed in public.
8) Targeted pro-Hindu leaders like Govindacharya, Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharati, RSS, Kalyan Singh, Ashok Singhal, Togadia, VHP and particularly Modi.

Normally, any low life politician who would promise ten issues to his people would care to fulfill at least 1 or 2 issues but Vajpayee actually gained the honor of being the only politician in the world who ditched everything for the sake of his legacy. Advani was watching from the sidelines this war between p-sec groups led by Hajpayee and the pro-Hindu groups in BJP, RSS & VHP. Having seen newspaper reports about Vajapyee's moderate views and acceptability and the loosing war of pro-Hindu groups, the transformation of Advani started by the beginning of 2003. Being the Dy.PM, he saw an opportunity to become the PM as soon as Hajpayee vacates the chair because of ill health. With this, the transformation of the duo was complete. They titled themselves maulana Hajpayee and maulana Hadvani. They also corrupted the party with power brokers and sycophancy. The great Hindu movement, which started in 1999, was destroyed by 2004. DURING THIS ENTIRE PERIOD, THOUGH THE MEDIA WAS SINGING THE TUNES OF VAJPAYEE, THEIR AGENDA WAS TO MISLEAD HIM AND DEFEAT HIM SO THAT NO HINDU LEADER WILL EVER COME CLOSE TO POWER AGAIN IN NEAR FUTURE. This led to Hajpayee carrying Musharaaf photos and wearing mullah turbans during election campaign and Hadvani starting his rath yatra in Kerala with a mullah and Christian on each side of the chariot. Came election results and Hindus did not venture out to vote. With mullahs, Christians & easily swayed poor people voting in strength, the results are there for everyone to see. THE MEDIA HAD THE LAST LAUGH. IT STILL CONTINUES TO STATE TO THIS DAY THAT THE ONE REASON WHY HADVANI WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE IS BECAUSE OF HIS PAST HINDUTVA VIEWS. This is only to keep his political position in check. That Is exactly why Hadvani doesn't talk about pro-Hindu issues anymore. He want to become the PM before he retires and he is doing whatever it takes to get it done. He is trying desperately to become a friend of p-sec people by his daily utterances about peace with Pak, using the BJP apparatus at the same time, taking pro-Hindus for a ride again with a promise on Ram temple again. He is a flip flopper. This man is close to PM's chair but unable to reach it. So he has gone berserk and talking differently each day, trying to impress Hindus, muslims and christians.

Isn't it strange that the BJP made so much fuss over Jarkhand issue (almost taking the entire party to Rashtrapathi Bhavan everyday, giving agitated statements as if there was a war or something, parading all MLA's, plotting strategies to whisk MLA's to Delhi etc...) but nothing of that sort over Kanchi Acharya issues. Is the govt. of Jarkhand that important for these people over the attack of the much-revered Hindu mutt? What a fall from noble thoughts to power grabbing moves?

From 2001 until last year, I had a very poor opinion of George Bush. I always thought him as arrogant, intellectually stupid and a racist. Ever since I started comparing him with Hajpayee and Hadvani, my respect for him grew. Despite all his faults, he has the guts to do whatever it takes to fulfill the promises he made to his white Christian right wing constituency. Another trait of him that I liked is, kicking mullah @#%$ right in the Middle East. He didn’t change his position just because the media didn’t like it or just because his critics said something about him. He went to Iraq and he WILL go to Iran next year. As for this duo, they will do whatever it takes to keep them in power. Today, they can play Holi, tomorrow host an Iftar party and day after, host a Christmas party for the sake of votes.

What concerns me is that there are still lots of people who would like to give benefit of doubt to Hadvani and see him become the PM one day, just because he is close to Hindus or whatever. I strongly believe that it will only encourage other pro-Hindus leaders to ditch Hinduism and go after power and prestige. Punishing Hajpayee and Hadvani and their cronies in the BJP will send a powerful message to rising stars of Hindutva. Let’s not back stab our self by supporting this duo. Let’s side with RSS and VHP on this issue and send a warning to BJP to dump them or face the dump from the Hindu masses.

Christians Spend U.S. $165 Million Every Year to Convert India's Hindus

"One hundred thousand children die every month in India! We must rescue them. There are thousands sleeping in the streets in total destitution," exhorts Spiros Zodhiates to the American donors of his Christian missionary organization. Advancing the Ministries of the Gospel. And rescue them he does, taking in thousands of Hindu orphans and placing them with Christian foster parents or in Christian orphanages, Hindu faith, nearly all will become Christians. It's an example of what Dr. S.M. Ponniah, Advisor to the Malaysia Hindu Sangam, meant when he acidly noted, "Christian missionaries pray on their knees on Sunday and prey on Hindus the rest of the week."

One billion US dollars, that's how much American Protestant Christian organizations spent last year trying to gain converts from other religions, and the Catholics spent an equal amount. According to official Indian government reports US $165 million is sent to Christian missions in India each year. The bewildering variety of programs it goes to include preaching, relief work, orphanages, leper colonies, foster homes, radio shows, literature distribution, Bible translation, rallies, medical work and more.

HINDUISM TODAY has conducted years of research on the missionary organizations based in America. These US organizations account for 80% of all money raised worldwide for missions. In this report we'll summarize that research, explaining: 1) the various approaches to missions; 2) the methods of fund-raising and the programs supported in India; 3) the theology behind the missions; 4) the degree of success; 5) the problems caused for Hindu society; and 6) the rethinking of proselytization ethics now occurring among the western religions.

Conservative vs. Liberal Missionaries

Not all Christians think alike about missions. In particular, there is a wide range of opinion on two subjects: how aggressive should an evangelist be, and what is the place of social service in a missionary program? To better understand this range, HINDUISM TODAY interviewed Dr. Dean Gillilant, Professor of Contextual Theology at California's Fuller Theological Seminary.

Dr. Gillilant explained that there are four positions on aggressiveness and social service, usually described as:

1) Extremely Conservative: In this view, social work is unnecessary, even undesirable, in missionary work. The missionary's entire focus should be on teaching the Gospel only.

2) Conservative: The conservative position. Dr. Gillilant said, considers social service programs "a wedge, a foot in the door." In this view, he said, one should "have medical patients in one end [of a mission hospital] and Christians out the other." The conservative missionary will aggressively work to convert anyone who comes under his social service programs.

3) Middle-Road: The middle-road position according to Dr. Gillilant is that "Social work is not enough without verbalization of the call to Christianity." These missionaries will run extensive social service programs, make sure that everyone in their care hears the Christian teachings, but will not proselytize as aggressively as the conservative missionary.

4) Liberal: The liberal position is that the mission should limit itself to social work as a demonstration of Christianity charity and accept what converts come naturally.

Over the last twenty years, there has been much rethinking among Christian missions, with most organizations now falling, according to Dr. Gillilant, in the middle-road to liberal positions.

Six Mission Organization Profiles

Mission organizations tend to specialize. Some operate enormous social programs and relief efforts. Others run schools and orphanages. Others hire itinerant preachers and yet others distribute literature to millions of people. Based on its particular programs, each mission will formulate a campaign in America to raise money. These appeals often contain highly selective, distorted or false descriptions of Hinduism. Here are brief profiles and samples of fund-raising appeals of six Protestant organizations.

1) With a 1984 income of $136.5 million dollars, the Southern Baptist Convention is the largest single missionary group in the world. Their fund raising appeal is theological in nature: "The evidence of the power of Satan in these masses [in South Asia] adds to the anger and frustration of a missionary under the mandate to 'turn them from the darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God' (Acts 26:18)."They go on, "Each of the major world religions, offering futile and unsatisfying alternatives to knowledge of the true God, dominates in one or more of the countries of South and Southeast Asia. This power of Satan is a living, palpable and visible reality in everyday life. If one can make a distinction between religions, surely Hindus would be next to the animists in the darkness in which they dwell."

Following the middle-road approach to missions, the Baptists run schools and medical services. They also fund local churches and individual missionaries. The charitable services thus provided to Hindus are, according to brochures, "highly effective instruments of evangelism."

2) Advancing the Ministries of the Gospels (AMG) is typical of the conservative organizations which are not directly associated with a major church. Their monthly newsletter pleads, "Pray for the children of India. [When I was in India], my heart broke as I saw some we have been unable to admit into our Abode of Love [a 1,000-child orphanage] pick up the rice kernel by kernel from the banana tree leaves on which the children of our institution had eaten. How I long to take them all in." AMG also cares for lepers: "Can you imagine yourself suffering from leprosy, being blind at the same time, and yet knowing that your eyesight can be restored for just $35?" With such appeals AMG raises $3,000,000 each year.

AMG's India programs, all directed at the Hindu population, include nine leper colonies with a total of 10,000 lepers, 8,000 sponsored children either in orphanages or placed with Christian foster parents, two homes for crippled children, a 2,000-student school and Bible correspondence courses. They claim 95% of the children in their care become Christians.

3) Some Indian organizations have discovered they can set up fund-raising institutions in America which are tax-exempt for American donors. The American Council of the Ramabai Mukti Mission of Kedgaon, Poona, is one such example. This hundred-year-old organization not only has an American Council raising $200,000 a year; it has councils in Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Scotland and England raising money, too. With this support they run an orphanage and foster-parent homes for mainly Hindu girls, and modest social, medical work, agricultural and evangelistic programs.

4) The Christian Nationals Evangelism Commission. Rather than send missionaries from America to India, CNEC recruits Indian nationals as missionaries. Not only is this vastly cheaper - $1400 a year to pay and equip a national against $25,000-$65,000 for an American sent overseas with his family - it alleviates the shortage caused by India's reluctance to grant visas for any more foreign missionaries. In addition to supporting missionaries, CNEC supports a spectrum of indigenous programs run by nationals. In 1984, CNEC raised $2.9 million.

"India - land of 330 million Gods" is spread in large letters across CNEC's India brochure. In addition to the 24 evangelists under the direction of Rev. Thomas Cherian in Cochin, Kerala, they're proud of "several Christian kindergartens where Hindu children have the opportunity of hearing the Gospel." Besides CNEC, many other organizations support nationals, at prices ranging from $300 to $1400 a year. For example, Gospel For Asia in Dallas, Texas, supports 700 nationals on a budget of $700,000 a year.

5) New Tribes Mission is an "extremely conservative" group. Neo-Dr. Livingstons, they work in remote tribal areas of the world under the most difficult of conditions. Their missionaries are trained in jungle survival and enough linguistics to reduce the Gospel to writing in an unknown language.

A New Tribes Mission brochure describes the experience of one of their missionaries who had just arrived at a remote tribe. A tribesmen had died the day before and this missionary attended the funeral. He wrote, "While I stood there, something gripped my heart. This man they were burying never had a chance to accept or reject Christ...Shocking was the realization - a Christ-less grave before my very eyes. And far too often this was happening the world over because the message of salvation came too late."

7) For real economy in spreading the word, Every Home Crusade (also known as World Literature Crusade) cannot be beaten. "Do you know that for $15/month you can reach a village in India where 1,500 people live! Can you think of a more economical way to reach that many people with the Gospel?" asks their brochure. Each paid EVC worker visits 200 homes a day, six days a week with gospel messages for adults, and children. Their most ambitious plan is to produce 450 million New Testaments (in the appropriate language) and mail one to every postal address in the world at a cost of $2.00 each.

What you've read above is a sample of what HINDUISM TODAY has on file from 33 of the 155 organizations. It is likely that the descriptions of Hinduism in these fund-raising materials (which are sent out by the millions) are an unrecognized but major factor in the American Christian's often negative image of Hinduism and India.

Motive for Missions

The New Tribes Institute gives their understanding of the Christian's purpose: "There is only one reason why we as Christians are not taken immediately home to be with Christ. We have been left here for a purpose - namely to finish the work that Christ has given to us to do. Before God's purpose for this age can be completed, the Gospel must be preached among all nations." Christians call this the "Great Commission." It appears in Matthew 24:14: "And this gospel of the Kingdom of God shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come."

According to the World Christian Encyclopedia, there are 9,000 such "nations" to witness. They define a nation as a people group bound by a common culture, language, race, etc. The WCE estimates that 7,000 have been adequately evangelized, leaving 2,000 to go. Dr. Gillilant said there is a massive effort underway right now to reach these 2,000 by the year 2000.

Some Christians, however, believe the gospel must be carried to every single individual to fulfill the Great Commission - hence such organizations as the Every Home Crusade. Fulfilling the Great Commission does not require converting everyone, only giving each the opportunity to accept or reject Christ.

Depending upon the line of thinking, as soon as the last nation is evangelized or everyone hears the gospel, "The end comes." The "end" is the Second Coming, the return of Jesus Christ, when the elect shall be taken to heaven and the rest shall perish. To the fervent Christian, his personal salvation and entrance to heaven is dependent upon the successful fulfillment of the Great Commission. Hence the energy and urgency which goes into missionary work.

Not all Christians, possibly not even most, accept this interpretation of the Great Commission. Many will say that their only duty is to demonstrate their Christian charity through relief work, the "liberal" position on missions.

How Successful a Campaign?

P.J. Johnstone in his book on evangelism. Operation World, states that "There are only about 200,000 converts out of Hinduism [1 in 3,000] in India living today [1980]." The World Christian Encyclopedia, considered even by Christians as very optimistic in its estimates, says there were 177,000 converts to Christianity in India between 1970 and 1980. Whichever figure is correct, careful reading of the missionary literature confirms that the evangelism programs in India generally are dismal failures. For example, the Mission Handbook laments, "How are we to explain the pitifully small dent that has been made on the 600 million Hindus of India?"

Such programs are not examples of fiscal efficiency. If the missionary investment for 19701980 was, say $100 million a year, the WCE's estimated 177,000 converts cost nearly S6,000 each to acquire - the price of funding one national worker for six years or, for the average Indian, 50 years of wages!

Why Evangelism is a Problem

The small number of converts doesn't mean the missionaries don't cause difficulties for Hindu society. There are a litany of complaints, but six major problems may be singled out:

1) Evangelists denigrate Hinduism, for example, by calling it the "work of Satan."

2) The use of social work in conjunction with evangelism creates converts by bribery.

3) New converts are taught to convert the rest of their family, usually by a constant disruption and onslaught against all of the family's Hindu practices.

4) Hindu children are adopted for the purpose of converting them.

5) Political upheaval has come in the wake of missionary activity. The ongoing revolts in Nagaland and Mizoram are just two examples in India. In South America, Protestants and Catholics alike are involved in instigating and helping various insurrections.

6) Also in the wake of successful conversion of remote tribes comes what a New York Times 1983 investigative report called "the sudden exposure of formerly inaccessible areas to the exploitation and mercenary attitudes of the outside world [bringing] alcoholism, corruption and debt to the region."

A Beacon of Hope

These problems, which occur in many non-Christian societies, are not being ignored by all Christians. The Interfaith Conference of Washington, D.C., comprised of leaders of the Islamic, Jewish, Mormon, Protestant and Roman Catholic faiths, issued a "Statement on Proselytism" in 1987. It reads in part, "We support the right of all religions to share their message in the spirit of good will. It is inappropriate, however, for one faith group openly to demean or disparage the philosophies or practices of another faith group as part of its proselytizing...Deceptive proselytizing efforts are practiced on the most vulnerable of populations - residents of hospitals, old age homes, confused youth, college students away from home. These proselytizing techniques are tantamount to coerced conversions and should be condemned."

The Hindu teaching that "Truth is one, paths are many" has touched many in the world, causing a needed rethinking of the ethics and side effects of attempts to gain converts to a religion.

Beijing's Alarm Over New "US Encirclement Conspiracy"

By Willy Lam

One of Beijing's worst nightmares seems to be coming true. Having apparently steadied the course in the Middle East, the Bush administration is turning to Asia to tame its long-standing "strategic competitor." While this particular term has been shelved since 9/11 – and Sino-U.S. relations have improved thanks to China's cooperation with Washington's global anti-terrorist campaign – there are signs at least from Beijing's perspective that Washington is spearheading multi-pronged tactics to contain the fast-rising Asian giant.

In the eyes of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leadership, the new doctrine of encirclement and containment was spelled out during a visit by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Tokyo, part of a recent tour through Asia. Echoing President Bush's State of the Union address, which pushed a foreign policy predicated upon "spreading democracy," Rice noted in a speech at Sophia University that "even China must eventually embrace some form of open, genuinely representative government." And she dropped hints that the U.S. would somehow bring about a democratic China through joint actions with its Asian allies. "I really do believe the U.S.-Japan relationship, the U.S.-South Korea relationship, the U.S.-India relationship – all are important in creating an environment where China is more likely to play a positive role than a negative role," she added.

It didn't help that Rice saluted in her Sophia speech the father of the anti-Soviet containment policy George Kennan – who had just passed away – as one of the "great architects of American foreign policy." Kennan had written in a celebrated 1947 Foreign Affairs piece that "the main element of any United States policy toward the Soviet Union must be that of a long-term, patient but firm and vigilant containment of Russian expansive tendencies." The Chinese must be very nervous about the possibility that Rice – and Bush – will simply substitute PRC for USSR. After all, it was Rice who coined the phrase "strategic competitor" in a 2000 Foreign Affairs article about the need to adequately take on a fast-emerging China. "It is important to promote China's internal transition through economic interaction while containing Chinese power and security ambitions," she wrote.

A Beijing source close to the Chinese foreign-policy establishment said the leadership under President Hu Jintao was not surprised by Rice's less-than-subtle remarks about revving up the anti-PRC containment juggernaut. This was despite the fact that in an apparent goodwill gesture, the State Department had announced shortly before her arrival in Beijing that Washington would this year not sponsor a motion condemning China at the UN Subcommittee on Human Rights in Geneva. The source said the CCP leadership saw the joint U.S.-Japan defense statement in February as a turning point in China-U.S. relations.

The U.S.-Japan statement referred to the looming threat of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and, most irksome for Beijing, it cited for the first time the maintenance of peace in the Taiwan Strait as a "common strategic objective" of the allies. "[The] meeting may mark the end of the extended Beijing-Washington honeymoon which came about because of 9/11," the source said. "Even now, of course, Washington requires Chinese help or acquiescence in its dealings with countries including Iran and North Korea. But Bush seems to have picked up his pre-9/11 agenda of containing China, or at least slowing down its progress toward quasi-superpower status." And the Chinese are well aware that Rice, who had advised President George H.W. Bush on ways to sink the Soviet Empire, was instrumental in shaping then-presidential candidate Bush's relatively hostile posture toward China.

Moreover, the explosive events in Kyrgyzstan last month have been interpreted by a number of advisers to President Hu as yet another manifestation of Bush's aggravated policy of "spreading democracy." This is despite the fact that in official press briefings, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokespeople merely expressed the wish that stability be restored to the former Soviet state as soon as possible – and that the work of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), of which both China and Kyrgyzstan are members, will not be affected.

More sophisticated observers such as National Defense University academic Jin Yinan has drawn the difference between the "Tulips revolution" in Kyrgyzstan on the one hand, and the Rose and Orange insurrections in Georgia and Ukraine. Jin told the Chinese media that should Bishkek fall under the influence of Muslim fundamentalists, "it's the Americans who would be hurt most." At the same time, the strategy professor pointed out that Washington's tendency to target pariah and dictatorship states had "departed from the [principle of] global democracy and engendered ill will in other [countries]."

Other commentators have noted how Washington could kill several birds with one stone should it manage to control the new Kyrgyz government. Given the 1,100-kilometer border between Kyrgyzstan and China – and Washington's already considerable foothold in nearby Uzbekistan and Tajikistan – the fall of the China-friendly government of disgraced president Askar Akayev would be no small victory for the "containment policy." A pro-U.S. Bishkek may be much less zealous in cooperating with the Chinese in rooting out Kyrgyz Muslim organizations that are reportedly funneling weapons and material to anti-Beijing, pro-independence elements in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region (XAR). Moreover, U.S. preponderance in central Asia could pose a threat to the giant oil pipeline that is being built between Kazakhstan and the XAR. And last but not least, the viability of the SCO, which set up an anti-terrorism center in Bishkek not long ago, is now in doubt.

In a discussion of whether the three allies cited by Rice – Japan, South Korea and India – would play an effective role in the Washington-led anti-China game plan, a panel of People's Daily experts and journalists expressed optimism that "the U.S. plot to encircle China will come to no avail." The specialists reckoned that only Japan would faithfully do Washington's bidding. Korean expert Shen Lin noted that Seoul "will not damage its ties with China because of the U.S." Shen added that South Korean politicians and opinion leaders had expressed reservations about Washington's plans to use Korean-based U.S. military facilities to promote American interests in northeast Asia.

New Delhi-based People's Daily journalist Ren Yan indicated that "India will not blindly follow the lead of the U.S." because the strategic partnership that Washington wanted to forge with the South Asian country was "centered on American interests." One purpose of Premier Wen Jiabao's trip to India this month is to consolidate China-Indian cooperation through means including resolving the decades-old border dispute between the two countries. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Beijing was keen to push Sino-Indian relations to a "new high." Analysts said despite the suspicion between the two neighbors – as well as Beijing's warm ties with Islamabad – the CCP leadership is confident that dramatic improvement in ties with India the past few years would at least persuade New Delhi not to become a pawn in America's anti-China machinations.

Indeed, Beijing is upbeat that China's fast-expanding global clout – and especially the vast China market – has better enabled the country to drive a wedge between the U.S. and quite a few of its traditional allies. Take Australia, which was one of the staunchest supporters of Washington's war against Iraq. Earlier this year, Prime Minister John Howard made it clear that Canberra would not join in the U.S. effort to lobby the European Union to persevere with its embargo on arms exports to China. And last summer, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer indicated that despite the Australia-U.S. joint defense agreement, Canberra could remain neutral if American forces were involved in a war over the Taiwan Strait. Immediately afterwards, Singapore, another close friend of the U.S., made known a similar stance of neutrality regarding a possible U.S.-China military conflict over Taiwan.

In any event, Rice's unusually candid statements in Tokyo have convinced President Hu, who is deemed within Chinese political circles as much less "pro-U.S." than former president Jiang Zemin, that he is right to treat Washington with extreme caution. Outwardly, of course, Hu will still cleave to late patriarch Deng Xiaoping's dictum that as far as the U.S. is concerned, Beijing should "avoid confrontation and boost cooperation." Because of China's dependence on the U.S. market – as well as Beijing's desire to acquire American technology – the Hu-Wen leadership will continue to bend over backwards to avoid a direct confrontation with America.

However, Beijing's suspicion that Bush may adopt a harsher China policy during the rest of his presidency could predispose the Hu leadership to be even more determined to boost China's military arsenal. Hu and his colleagues are also expected to play the "North Korean card" for whatever its worth. The Chinese president and commander-in-chief is due to visit Pyongyang next month for high-level talks with DPRK dictator Kim Jong-il. While Hu will at least go through the motions of persuading Pyongyang to return to the six-party talks, the Chinese supremo will also explore ways to use China's still-formidable clout with the Hermit Kingdom as a diplomatic weapon against the U.S. – and Japan.

Indeed, another unfortunate result of growing tension between Beijing and Washington is that Sino-Japanese relations are fast heading toward a vicious cycle. Given the intensification of the U.S.-Japanese military alliance – as well as joint U.S.-Japan efforts to persuade Brussels to hold on to its anti-China arms embargo – Beijing is close to giving up hope that it could turn around worsening China-Japan ties in the foreseeable future. This is despite the overture made by Premier Wen last month that both sides should "enthusiastically" create conditions for the resumption of high-level exchanges. Top-level visits between the two neighbors were stopped after Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's first visit to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine in 2001. In the past fortnight, a campaign launched by nationalistic Chinese websites to prevent Japan from being made a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council has developed into a boycott of Japanese products in a number of coastal cities.
