PAKISTAN: The White Old Lady with a Green Turban

Faraz Naveed

(Ed. Note: On November 8, 2004, Faraz Ahmed Naveed, a student at Karachi University and young peace activist was kidnapped tortured and then killed allegedly by agents of the Pakistani state. It is strongly suspected that Farazwho was the son of prominent human rights activist and journalist Baseer Naveedwas targeted because of Baseers vociferous campaign against the construction of the Lyari Expressway near Karachi. However, despite almost 2 years since the shocking incident, little or no action has been taken by the police or government to investigate and solve the case. Consequently the killers continue to remain at large.

Months after his tragic death, Faraz's family quite by chance discovered several pieces of their son's writings, on diverse issues that one would hardly expect a schoolboy (which he was at the time of writing) to ponder upon. But in fact, no one had been quite aware of the extent of Faraz' deep passion for humanity and wonderful talent for writinguntil the discovery.

This short article about the plague of religious dogmatism in Pakistan was written by Faraz when he was only 15 years old.)

A well-known scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun, and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of the vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said, What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a tortoise.

This old lady can now be seen everywhere in Pakistan. This old lady thinks that the whole of the world and science is wrong, but she is the only true person and she knows everything. Everybody in the world is wrong. She thinks that it is her right to kill everyone talking against Islam and the Holy Prophet. She thinks that Islam should spread on the tip of the sword. Nobody should try to think anything but Islam.

Nobody could ask her, if Hazrat Ibrahim did not think outside his paternal religion, how could he have become a prophet of Allah? The lady says that nobody should read the bible. So if the Christians also say nobody should read the Quran, how could a non-Muslim become a Muslim? The old mad lady says that anybody who talks bad about Hazrat Mohammad (peace be upon him) should be murdered. So she should answer as to why Allah doesn't destroy the people talking badly about the prophet. The reason is that Allah gives a chance to non-Muslims to be Muslim. It is not the duty of a Muslim to kill a non-Muslim for he is also a human being made by Allah.

The old lady says that anything that was held to be correct at the time of the prophet should be established now in Pakistan. So then she too should face the difficulties faced by Hazrat Mohammad (p.b.u.h) at the visit of Taif. But NO! This old lady is not facing the difficulties faced by Hazrat Muhammad (p.b.u.h) but is making difficulties for some secular Muslims too, like the non-Muslims of Taif. According to her, being secular and science are both evils and devils and she is the most beautiful fairy (for heaven). But her thinking is so wrong, she could only be a devilish fairy (of hell).

What is the name of this old lady of Pakistan and what is her physical appearance? The name of this old lady is Mulla-ism and she is found everywhere in Pakistan wearing a green turban and white Qameez Shalwar as an identity for seeing a friend or master of Iblees (Satan). In her mind (she has a big head but little gray matter)and in her heart (which is full of terror), there is only hate for truth and honesty and love for horror and untruths.

According to her, she is the only MUSLIM left
